Can Bathroom Tile Be Refinished? (Yes — Here's How)
Yes — wall tile, tub surrounds, and shower tile can be refinished (reglazed): cleaned, mold-killed, acid-etched, and sprayed with a bonded coating that changes the color and seals the grout, for $400–$1,500. It's not recommended for floor tile. Reglazed tile lasts 10–15 years and avoids a $4,000–$12,000 re-tile.
How tile refinishing actually works
Reglazing bonds a new, sealed finish to your existing tile and grout. The process is all about adhesion and mold control:
- Clean & kill mold. We strip caulk, deep-clean, and treat any mold in the grout.
- Etch. The glossy tile is acid-etched so the coating can grip — the step that makes the bond permanent.
- Prime & spray. A bonding primer and multiple coats of a tough epoxy/urethane finish go on, sealing tile and grout as one non-porous surface.
- Cure. The finish cures before water hits it, usually 24–48 hours.
What can — and can't — be refinished
| Surface | Refinish? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shower & tub-surround walls | Yes | Ideal — color change + sealed grout |
| Bathroom wall tile | Yes | Wainscot or full walls |
| Countertop tile | Yes | Smooth, grout-free result |
| Floor tile | Not recommended | Traffic + slip risk |
| Loose or hollow tile | Repair first | Fix the substrate before coating |
Reglaze vs. regrout vs. re-tile
Reglazing changes the tile color and seals the grout for $400–$1,500 in a day. Regrouting only refreshes the lines; a full re-tile is a $4,000–$12,000 demolition.
